As many of you may have already read, the microsoft windows XP and 2003 source codes have leaked online and there been almost as many articles that claim it’s just fake, but NTDEV has shown that this is almost full source code of a working microsoft windows 2003, he had to copy some files from a real installation media to be able to make his own installation media.
The microsoft windows 2003 source code has a time limit and bombs if your clock is set to current time, you need to set it back to 2003.
When it comes to the missing files, some of them may be in the microsoft windows xp source code, as there are 16509 files missing in 2003 compared to microsoft windows xp (and 17424 the other way around), the difference could be that files are placed in different directories in the different sources.
There are a year between the two source codes, so the xp source code will have less security vulnerabilities fixed.
To see the proof of the build, you can watch the video howtocompile2k3.mkv yourself and decide if it’s a hoax or not.
If you want to try to build it yourself, there are two versions of the package out there, the simplest to get hold of is ‘Microsoft leaked source code archive_2020-09-24’ (no link provided of copyright reasons), this includes other source code leaked from microsoft including a 27gb large directory full of microsoft’s patent portfolio and this is why it’s whopping 43gb large. The more elusive ‘windows_xp_source.rar’ is just 3.8gb large and includes only the source code leaked last.
A question that pops up is how useful is the source code for 3rd party who wants to hack microsoft windows 10, I would bet it would be quite useful if they find some obscure bug, as we know from the days with the non-chrome base edge browser that many bugs that appeared in internet explorer 6+ was also in the edge browser, so microsoft uses a lot of legacy code and due of backwards compatibility and so hackers have a good chance to find vulnerabilities they can exploit on newer versions of microsoft operating systems, but they may have to hurry as the latest rumour mill is talking about a compatibility layer as wine from microsoft, so that they can shift to a Linux kernel. We already seen how the Linux kernel has become an important part of the microsoft windows 10 and it may not be too far fetched that we see the change which one is booted first as hyper-v will soon support Linux as the host system (microsoft has presented a rcf bout some kernel changes they would need in the Linux kernel to do this).
