Tso criticize bad journalism

I think there was quite many who read a lot of news about ext4 corruption bug, which in the end turns out to be nothing more than fsck reporting it has updated super block values which it didn’t flush to disk due of system crash or unclean unmounting.

As Ext4 always done this before in secret, people started to think that it was a serious bug in the Ext4 file system, and Phoronix did report this as a most serious bug and even wrote like he was an expert on file systems. As Ubuntu don’t have staff specialised in file systems, they got help from Tso who had no debug information to go from, not even a fsck message, so of course when using a distribution which makes a clean shut down, it was quite difficult to reproduce the issue, which made it take too long to figure out that the issue was a no-issue and during this time windows journalism caused damages for Ext4.

Both the bad journalism with low knowledge of what they do, like Phoronix and distributions which do relay on other distributions work to be able to release their own packages as Ubuntu are damaging the GNU/Linux reputation.

For the bad journalism we do not have a solution, but for redistributing distributions we do, we could try to merge them into the main distribution and see to that the redistributing folks only work on the changes they want to make and let the main distribution just take care of all the core parts and having one bugzilla and documentation which is under the control of the main distribution, this would make it more possible that there is a specialist who can take care of the bug and in early state filter our all the stupidities and then people like Tso can spend time on more important matters than hunting none existing bugs. At the same time we get official HOWTO’s which are correct instead of those Ubuntu where we can find quite many completely wrong instructions how to set-up apache.
